As the world marks International Coffee Day on October 1, Australians are proving once again that their love affair with coffee is here to stay. From the humble flat white to a quick espresso shot or a weekend iced mocha, coffee has cemented itself as a daily ritual woven into the nation’s culture.
New figures from global nutrition and food tracking app MyFitnessPal reveal just how fiercely Australians cling to their daily brew. A recent poll found two in five (40%) Australians would not give up coffee under any circumstance – even if faced with potential health risks. Chocolate trailed only slightly behind, with 39% of respondents naming it as their most indispensable indulgence.
Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador Michaela Sparrow says the nation’s devotion to coffee is about far more than a caffeine hit.
“From bean to cup, Aussies love a caffeinated brew,” Sparrow said. “It’s not just the taste we enjoy – it’s the daily rituals, like sharing a cuppa at home or catching up with colleagues at the office. Coffee is part of our social fabric.”
But Sparrow also warned that not all coffees are created equal. Many Australians may be consuming hidden sugars and fats without realising it, particularly from flavoured creams, syrups and sweetened milk alternatives.
“To make sure your favourite pick-me-up is working in your favour, it might be as simple as swapping a syrup-laden latte for a long black with a dash of milk,” Sparrow advised. “Even choosing unsweetened milk alternatives can make a big difference.”
Tools such as MyFitnessPal, she added, can help Australians gain visibility over what goes into their cup.
Sparrow also suggested timing coffee consumption wisely. “Drinking coffee on a full stomach supports better digestion, helps maintain energy levels and can reduce jitters or crashes later in the day.”
At its heart, Sparrow said, it’s about balance. “Understanding what’s in your favourite foods or drinks means you can enjoy them in a way that supports your overall nutrition and health goals.”
So, as Australians raise their mugs this International Coffee Day, one thing is clear: coffee isn’t just a beverage – it’s a non-negotiable part of life.
